It has been suggested that the Dagless surname is derived from the Scottish name "Dalgleish". "Scottish Surnames" by George F Black suggests a Scottish derivation.
Given this, it would probably be safe to assume that the name progressed geographically southwards, so the northern branches of the family may be older than the Norfolk ones.
It has also been suggested, although I personally have yet to look into this, that the name originates in Denmark, the meaning being "Sunless".
My particular branch of the family comes primarily from Saxthorpe in Norfolk.
